More ESP – Expanding the Mind’s Potential
ESP, precognition, premonition, intuition, sixth sense or perhaps “spidey-sense”. Call it what you will but the human brain seems to have a capacity and ability to interpret information outside and apart from what we usually receive through our five senses. Science is hesitant to study this aspect of the human condition because of its intangible quality, but there have been countless accounts from ordinary people who have had extraordinary experiences, perhaps saving themselves from harm or difficult situations just because they listened to their gut.
ESP – Expanding the Mind’s Potential
No conversation about the expansive potential of the mind would be complete without considering psychic abilities. This would comprise telepathy (communicating with others via thoughts), precognition (prediction of future events), telekinesis (moving objects with the mind), remote viewing (seeing a location with the mind’s eye without being at that location), out-of-body experiences (also known as astral travel) and mediumship (the ability to communicate with souls who have crossed into the Light, or with earthbound spirits). All the supernatural, paranormal or psychic events that Randi James, the famous sceptic and paranormal debunker, would call woo-woo.

More Amazing Mental Feats
This instalment continues to look at individuals with extraordinary mental abilities. Savants have one or more mental abilities that can be considered a superpower. Most savants are on the autistic spectrum and can possess social, cognitive or language difficulties and often have an IQ of below 70. An article in The Guardian (Feb 12/05) estimates that 10% of the autistic population and 1% of the neurotypical population fall into the category of savant.
Amazing Mental Feats
Ordinary people with extraordinary mental abilities. They’re out there. Over the next couple of months, we will be looking at several individuals and their special talents. If science can ever pinpoint how the brain of these individuals allows such abilities to manifest, to figure out how the seemingly impossible is achieved, I wonder if the extraordinary could be the norm for future generations?
